Season’s greetings from the Big Lottery Fund

December 17, 2012

Christmas and New Year message from John Rose, Director of the Big Lottery Fund in Wales.

Season’s greetings,

Wales Director John Rose

Wales Director John Rose

This year we will have distributed over £35 million to Welsh communities most in need. Whether it’s funding for hospices or older people’s befriending schemes, projects to help young people into employment, a community transport scheme or small grants to buy new equipment for a youth group, we are able to support all sorts of projects through our different award programmes. One of the best bits of our work is making such a positive difference across a broad spectrum of different causes.

It’s difficult to choose personal highlights among so many great projects and pieces of work this year but here’s a few that spring to mind:

  • The 18th birthday of the National Lottery which was a good time to reflect on the enormous impact the Lottery has had on Wales. It has simply changed lives, and through the Big Lottery Fund (BIG), it has funded over £600 million to 22,000 projects in Wales. Recent awards include £20 million for older people, £15 million for mental health causes and £14 million to help hundreds of people back into work.
  • Earlier this year, our Getting Ahead launch was a huge success. This £3.4 million programme will improve the chances of care leavers and young offenders progressing into sustainable employment or further learning or training by increasing their employability skills. The case study of Chris Storer we used to promote the programme was not only inspiring but also a great example of a potential beneficiary.
  • We have supported so many great projects but seeing it’s Christmas I thought it would be nice to showcase Lylac Ridge in Caerphilly in the audio slideshow below. Among the animals they use for therapy for young people with learning and behavioural problems are reindeer.

  • Our award-winning Grab a Grant programme saw five community groups in north Wales sharing in £25,000. It was a partnership with the Wrexham Leader and Flintshire Leader which involved readers choosing the winning community projects through a public vote.
  •  Finally, we have given a warm welcome to two new members of Wales Committee who decide which projects receive grants. They are Sir Adrian Webb, who will mark one year as chair in January, and Rona Aldrich who joined in the autumn.

Of course with the ongoing economic downturn it’s crucial that our money makes a real impact, and as the largest distributor of National Lottery funding, this is happening every day. But despite it being another successful, rewarding year, we are not resting on our laurels and are constantly looking to make the biggest difference we can with every £1 we distribute. In 2013 and beyond, we have a golden opportunity to support a country with varying needs and make some real headway into addressing disadvantage.

Thank you for your continued support and merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
