Thousands of Welsh people celebrate The Big Lunch 2015

June 17, 2015

Sunday June 7th saw thousands of people across Wales join their communities and come together to have a Big Lunch – an annual event that encourages people to get together with their neighbours over anything from a few cups of tea to a big street party!

From Cardiff to Flintshire, residents took to their streets and came together to have fun and celebrate the occasion with their fellow neighbours. But don’t just listen to what we have to say, we spoke to residents who had Big Lunches and here’s what they had to say about what makes the Big Lunch so great:

“There’s very much a community feel to it. Nowadays there doesn’t seem to be an awful lot of community spirit, or at least it doesn’t feel like it. The Big Lunch is a great opportunity to develop that community spirit feel again by meeting your neighbours and having fun.”

“It gets the whole community together. It’s good to be able to actually speak to neighbours on a proper level. Usually most people just walk down the street, see their neighbours and just say “Hello” in passing, but a day like this gets people to sit down and speak to each other and it’s these types of conversations that lead to days like this.”

Representing the Big Lunch for Wales, Gwion Thorpe said: “We are so thrilled and massively proud that so many people came together, once again, for The Big Lunch in Wales this year.  The sun shone on all sorts of wonderful Big Lunches, from a beach party in Aberporth to a dog show in Flintshire and a whole host of street parties across South Wales. One of my favourite anecdotes was from Cerys in Cardiff who invited the prospective buyers of her house to her street’s Big Lunch so they could get to know their new neighbours before they moved in – how nice is that!

This has been the seventh successful year of The Big Lunch and it’s brilliant to see so many people taking our simple idea and making it work wonders for their communities.  Hearing about the impact that these events are having year on year is truly inspiring and the best thing is that we know there’s plenty more to come – the Big Lunch is always just the start.”

If you’ve not been part of a Big Lunch this year then it’s not too late. Big Lunches are running all the way up until the end of June and you can find out more, and register here!
