Have your say on the Big Lottery Fund’s new rural programme

October 15, 2015

25The Big Lottery Fund (BIG) in Wales is developing a new £13.5 million programme for rural communities and is inviting you to help shape it.

Last year our Your Voice, Our Vision consultation identified Rural Communities as a priority area for investment.  The challenges that they face are many, varied and often unique. Whilst some are similar to those faced in more urban areas, some are specifically rural in nature. Here are some of the headline issues:

  • 25% of rural households overall live in poverty, and that 20% of employed people find themselves in poverty
  • Rural Wales lacks an integrated, accessible and affordable public transport network and owning a car is often the only option
  • Whilst online access to many services is becoming the norm, inadequate broadband services and poor ICT skills lead to digital exclusion in many rural areas
  • A lack of affordable housing and rented accommodation is a significant problem. Rural properties tend to be older and more difficult to insulate and make fuel efficient, so fuel poverty is more prevalent in rural areas.
  • Welfare and advice organisations have reported an increase in demand for housing services, debt advice and benefit enquiries in rural areas
  • There is a need to mitigate the impact of poverty by building social capital and community resilience through community networks and support services.

We want your views

We’ve done a lot of work since the consultation, meeting with many individuals and organisations from rural communities to help shape the programme. One thing is clear; the Big Lottery Fund doesn’t have all the answers, and those living and experiencing the challenges of rural communities are better placed to find them.

That’s why we will be putting people in the lead to help shape the programme and identify local solutions to the problems they face.

The programme will enable people living in these rural areas to work with their communities to bring about positive changes. We anticipate that this will allow groups to support people to make changes that improve their lives; through building on the existing strengths, skills, assets and energy within communities.

Reaching the right people in rural communities to ask for their views isn’t always easy, which is why we would like your help. We’ve set up a survey to ask you how we can reach rural communities effectively to help shape the programme.

You can do the survey online or you can request it via email (ruth.bates@biglotteryfund.org.uk), by post to our Wales office or by contacting Ruth Bates, our Head of Communications or on 01686 611702.

The survey is open until 7th December and we look forward to hearing from you.

You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I to find this topic to be
really one thing that I believe I’d never understand.
It kind of feels too complex and very wide for me.
I’m looking ahead for your subsequent put up,
I’ll try to get the cling of it!
