Communities all across the UK are set to come together over the weekend 1 and 2 of June over a cuppa and cake for this year’s Big Lunch. In preparation for their local Big Lunches, teams from across the UK have embarked on journeys covering hundreds of miles, visiting community projects and passionate people to see the amazing work that they do in their communities, and to join in their celebrations.
The Big Lunch is an Eden Communities initiative funded by The National Lottery Community Fund and made possible thanks to National Lottery players.
Alex Davies from our Mid and West team joined this year’s Wales walkers, Katie and Sian, on their journey on a gloriously sunny weekend as the traveled through Lampeter in Ceredigion to visit the beautiful Long Wood Community Woodland just a few miles outside of the town, which was awarded over £700,000 through our Community Asset Transfer programme.
“The first thing that struck me as I arrived was just how serene the whole place was. The entire place has been built with materials from the woodland itself, including the whole visitor centre itself and outdoor décor.
“I was really lucky to be able to see a bird-watching hut that volunteers were building just a short walk away from the main building too. Again, the materials were all sourced from the woodland itself and I can see the finished hut being a fantastic addition to what’s already a beautiful stop-off point for walkers in the area.
“It was lovely to have a chat with Katie and Sian about their journey up until that point. They had just arrived from Fishguard in Pembrokeshire after visiting the fantastic, community-run Theatr Gwaun in the area. The quiet woodland seemed like it would be a massive change of pace compared to a bustling community and I got the impression that they had seen an equally wide variety of projects on their travels so far, and those yet to come.
“If you’re ever passing through the area then I’d highly encourage you to visit the centre and have a wander around. It’s a lovely place to visit, and one that’s been made possible thanks to National Lottery players.”
