The Myrddin Evergreen Club: how simple things are bringing people together in Carmarthenshire

CC: Evergreen Club

In the heart of Abergwili, Wales, the Myrddin Evergreen Club has long been a beacon in the local community. Thanks to support from The National Lottery Community Fund in Wales, this cherished club has been able to offer a variety of enriching activities, including day trips and lunches.

However, as time passed, the club faced challenges. Membership numbers dwindled, and with an aging membership, the range of activities had to be scaled back. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic further impacted the members’ ability to socialise leaving many feeling isolated.

Mair, Chairperson at Evergreen Club, said: “The club was set up many moons ago. Even my mother, who passed away in 2002, was a part of the club   although it had a different set up.

“These meet ups are really quite good. You get to meet people from different areas, they have a meal and a cup of tea. And, in the summer we have a high tea which is always lovely. We always encourage people to come along.

“A lot of members live on their own, so this is great for them.”

When members were finally able to meet back up face-to-face, the club soon realised they needed to secure more funding to pay for the meals provided to members.

With meals costing around £13 per person, The Evergreen Club turned to The National Lottery Community Fund to secure the necessary capital to continue their important community work.

Applying for a National Lottery Awards for All grant of £6,240, the money is now being used to ensure that all members can continue to meet up once a month throughout 2025.

Andrew Owen, Head of Funding at The National Lottery Community Fund in Wales said: “The Myrddin Evergreen Club is a shining example of community initiatives taking place in the heart of small communities in Wales. It is clear to see that the efforts of Mair and other members of this committee are vital in ensuring people are able to socialise and feel less isolated.”
